i'm sure this is nothing new, but i couldn't help but mention it. this is about hardwired psychology of self, on stage, making sense of nothing. just wondering how things would play off if the players were a little stoned. not drunk, but stoned. completely different mental escapade. sometimes i think this is the only out we have, because control is the fiercest battle.

humans have agendas. that shift and evolve, but are constant, and inescapable, whether they are 'get food', 'get laid', 'amass wealth', or 'be liked'.

how does van halen tie in to this, exactly? besides the 'get laid' flavor of agenda?

I don't know. I guess a story could have a purpose that the teller isn't aware of. But I feel like usually the teller is at least trying to produce a certain effect.

Does that makes storytellers (writers and musicians, but folklorists, especially) active manipulators rather than passive conduits for history, messages and lessons?

Hi! Long time listener, first time caller. Big fan, big fan. You remember that time in Gleick's book The Information where he was talking about how much more energy it takes to forget something than to remember something? That was awesome. I reckon I leverage the google effect to allow myself to forget larger chunks of information - trying to forget a specific pink elephant is hard, but not worrying about whether i remember details about colored animals is a bit easier, and that sloughing of memory frees me up to pay more attention to the current object of obsession, maybe?

Thanks for your analysis, i was having trouble reading this article, and am glad you have distilled it down for me. And you provided a learning moment to boot! Now I can move onto the DFW article/distraction you referenced.
